Step by step
How to add page numbers to a PDF
Step 1: Drop a PDF on the box above, or select Choose file.
Step 2: Pick where the numbers go and how they read, for example Page 1 of 10. Leave the pages empty to number every page.
Step 3: Select Add page numbers, then Download PDF.
Position and style
Numbers can sit at the bottom or the top of the page, in the middle or in either corner. Bottom centre is the classic choice for reports and books; a bottom right corner suits documents that will be printed and stapled.
Four styles are available: a plain number, Page 1, 1 of 10 and Page 1 of 10. The number is printed in a plain dark grey typeface, sized to the page, so it reads well without drawing attention. Pages stored sideways still get an upright number.
Numbering only some pages
Type the pages to number, for example 2-12 to leave a cover page blank. Each page keeps the number of its position in the document, so page 2 shows 2 and the total in 'of 10' counts every page, including the ones you left unnumbered.
If your document needs numbering to start at 1 on the second page, remove the cover first with Delete PDF pages, number the rest, then merge the cover back with Merge PDF.
What changes in your PDF
The numbers are added as real text on top of each page. Everything else stays as it was: the pages are not re-rendered or re-compressed, so text stays selectable and images keep their quality. The work happens inside your browser tab, and your PDF is never uploaded.
