Step by step

How to rotate an image

  1. Step 1: Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP image on the box above, or select Choose file.

  2. Step 2: Choose a rotation, a flip or both. 90° right turns it clockwise.

  3. Step 3: Select Rotate image, then Download image and check the preview.

Rotating and flipping

Rotate turns the whole image by a quarter or a half turn: 90° right is clockwise, 90° left is anticlockwise, and 180° turns it upside down. Flip mirrors the picture: left to right, as in a mirror, or top to bottom. You can combine a rotation with a flip in one go.

Phone photos often carry a hidden note that tells viewers which way is up. The tool first shows the photo the way your phone meant it, then applies your rotation, and saves the result into the pixels themselves, so it looks the same in every app, even ones that ignore that note.

Format and quality

The image keeps its format: a JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG with its transparency. PNG images are saved without compression artefacts. JPG and WebP images are saved again at a high quality, so a rotated photo looks the same to the eye, but the file size can change a little.

Camera details stored in the original file, such as the date or location, are not copied to the rotated image.

Private

The rotation happens inside your browser tab. Your image is never uploaded, and the original on your device is not changed.

Frequently asked questions

Which way does 90° right turn the image?
Clockwise, like the hands of a clock. The top of the picture ends up on the right. Choose 90° left to turn it the other way.
My photo looks rotated in one app and fine in another. Why?
Some apps follow the orientation note a phone stores in the file and some ignore it. A rotated copy from this tool has the rotation in the pixels, so it looks the same everywhere.
What is the difference between rotate and flip?
Rotating turns the picture around its centre. Flipping mirrors it, so text in the image reads backwards after a left to right flip.
Does rotating reduce the quality?
PNG images are saved without compression artefacts. JPG and WebP photos are saved again at a high quality, which keeps them looking the same, but they are not a byte-for-byte copy.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is rotated inside your browser tab and never leaves your device.
