Step by step
How to scan pages to a PDF
Step 1: On a phone, select Take a photo and photograph the first page. Add up to five pages with Take another photo, or choose saved photos instead.
Step 2: Keep the Document look to make the paper white and the text dark, or choose Original colours for coloured pages.
Step 3: Select Create PDF, then Download PDF.
Getting a clean scan
Lay the page flat on a darker surface, in even light, and hold the phone straight above it so the page fills most of the picture. Avoid your own shadow and the glare of a ceiling light. Each photo becomes one A4 page, fitted without cropping, in the order you took them; drag them to change the order.
The Document look turns the photo grey and stretches its brightness so the paper comes out white and the text dark, much like a scanner app. It works best on printed or handwritten text on plain paper. For photos, drawings or forms where colour matters, choose Original colours.
What it does not do
The tool does not straighten a page photographed at an angle or cut away the table around it, so frame the page carefully. It also does not recognise the text: the PDF holds pictures of the pages, so you cannot search or copy the words yet.
Up to five photos make one PDF. For longer documents, make several PDFs and join them with Merge PDF.
Private
The photos go straight from your camera into this browser tab and are turned into a PDF there. They are never uploaded, which matters for letters, contracts and other personal papers.
