Step by step

How to convert a JPG to another format

  1. Step 1: Drop a JPG image on the box above, or select Choose file.

  2. Step 2: Beside your photo, choose PNG or WebP. For WebP, leave the quality at 85 or move the slider.

  3. Step 3: Select Convert, then Download image.

PNG or WebP?

Choose PNG when an app or a site insists on PNG, or when you will edit the image again and do not want it compressed a second time. A PNG made from a JPG is usually much larger than the JPG, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly.

Choose WebP for websites: at the same visual quality it is usually smaller than the JPG, and every current browser shows it. Some older software and many print services do not accept WebP, so keep the JPG for those.

Orientation, colour and details

Phone photos often store a note saying which way is up. The tool shows the photo upright first and saves it that way, so the new image looks right everywhere. Colours are converted to sRGB, the standard for screens, and camera details such as the date or location are not copied.

Converting cannot recover detail that JPG compression has already removed: the new file looks like the JPG, not like the original camera image. If you need a transparent background, convert to PNG and then remove the background in an image editor.

Private

The conversion runs inside your browser tab. Your photo is never uploaded, and the original is not changed.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my PNG so much larger than the JPG?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, while JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices. For photos that makes PNG files several times larger.
Will WebP be smaller than my JPG?
Usually, at a similar look. A JPG that is already heavily compressed may not shrink much; the result screen shows the real size.
Does converting improve the quality?
No. The new image looks like the JPG it came from. Converting cannot bring back detail that JPG compression removed.
Can I get a transparent background?
Converting does not remove the background. A PNG can hold transparency, but the photo's background stays until you remove it in an editor.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is converted inside your browser tab and never leaves your device.
