Step by step
How to add a watermark to a PDF
Step 1: Drop a PDF on the box above, or select Choose file.
Step 2: Type the watermark text, choose where it goes and how see-through it is. Leave the pages empty to mark every page.
Step 3: Select Add watermark, then Download PDF.
Placement and look
Diagonal runs the text corner to corner across the middle of each page, the classic look for DRAFT or COPY. Center places it straight across the middle; Top and Bottom place a smaller line near the edge, useful for a label that should not cover the content.
The text is grey, in a bold typeface, and sized to the page, so it looks the same on small and large pages. Opacity controls how see-through it is: around 20 to 30 percent keeps the page readable, higher values make the mark hard to miss. Pages that are stored sideways still get an upright watermark.
What a watermark does and does not do
A watermark is a visible label. It discourages casual reuse and makes the status of a document clear, but anyone with a PDF editor can remove it, so it is not a security measure. To stop people opening a PDF, use Protect PDF.
The watermark can use letters, numbers and punctuation from Western European languages, up to 60 characters. Other scripts, such as Hindi or Chinese, are not supported yet, and the tool tells you rather than producing a blank mark.
Private
The watermark is added inside your browser tab. Your PDF is never uploaded, and the original file on your device is not changed.
